The Forbidden Stars, completing the story begun in the novels The Wrong Stars and The Forgotten Stars, is an action-packed romp through a distant solar system filled with octopus aliens, human-alien chimeras, and spaceships made out of meat. You won't get insights into the human condition, but you will get weird aliens, AI, and wisecracking characters that love to blow stuff up. I love that in a book. Captain Callie Machedo and her crew are like family, and after three books they feel like my family as well. There were some editing issues, but all in all a superb effort from Tim Pratt. So, I'm at 99% on this book and I literally cannot care enough to finish the final couple pages. Which I've never felt before.Pratt laid out a nifty premise in the first book of the series: human civilization has spread through space via wormholes that lead to 29 other worlds. An alien species humans call Liars (because they never tell the same story twice about their origins or purpose) facilitate that network and provide a tiny trickle of ultra-tech advancements. This is a tiny spoiler: they're doing that to carefully restrict human exploration away from an ancient, tyrannical super-predator species they call the Axiom. The Axiom rest in a multi-millennial stasis waiting for their billion-year-long plans to play out, and will eliminate humanity should they awaken. It's cool, I really like the tension between the humans, the Liars and the Axiom. Space adventure is kind of littered with predatory superspecies these days but it's fine, whatever, genre fiction doesn't need to pave a new path every time.This third book, though. It's weird: at no point is there any actual tension or uncertainty. Our protagonist crew of the White Raven is now too beloved by the author to ever put in real peril, and it shows. I don't love the "Mary Sue" framing you sometimes read but in the case of this book, yeah, that's totally it. The brave and beautiful captain of the ship never fails, her plucky sidekicks never question her authority or run into, well, any problems at all. It's a couple hundred pages of sci-fi-adventure romp and I got to the end and said "wait but...really? They just did everything they wanted and succeeded at every step?"There's a "big" reveal at the end that's...okay. There's even a "big" character moment but literally 5 pages later, that moment is rendered moot. It's the kind of reveal that exists to sell a fourth book. I'm not sure I'm in for another one like this.
